AARPCO Advocacy Leadership Announced

AARP is pleased to announce AARP Colorado's new advocacy chair and vice chair for the 2017-18 Colorado Legislative session, which begins in January.

Shirley Leow, Ph.D., will serve as chair of the AARP Colorado volunteer team, which is made up of more than 21 working and retired adults, who monitor bills in the Colorado Legislature that would impact older adults and their families.

AARP Colorado and Leow named Margaret Hughes, Ph.D., as the advocacy team's vice char.

"We are thrilled to have individuals of Drs. Leow and Hughes caliber leading our advocacy team," said Bob Murphy, AARP Colorado state director. "They both have an impressive track record of fighting for older adults in their Colorado community and beyond."

Leow is a retired pharmaceutical executive with development experience in pharmaceuticals, biologics and medical devices, including USG programs. She has a doctorate degree in leadership and a master's degree in biomedical sciences.

Hughes is a retired associate professor, who is currently teaching online social welfare policy courses as an adjunct professor for California State University, San Bernardino. She earned her Ph.D. in social policy from Brandeis University, Heller School.

"The two women create a dynamic duo and are ready to take on the important issues to older adults at the Colorado Capitol, including affordable housing, the Colorado state budget, financial security, 911 accountability and caregiving," said Kelli Fritts, AARP advocacy director.
