AARP Alabama partners with WBRC Fox 6 and Secure Destruction Services for an Anniston Shred-A-Thon to fight ID Theft on Wednesday, August 20

Non-perishable food donations will be collected for Community Food Bank of Central Alabama

Anniston, AL – AARP Alabama, WBRC Fox 6 and Secure Destruction Services will be staging a free community Shred-A-Thon on Wednesday, August 20 from 7 AM to 2 PM in the parking lot at Anniston’s City Meeting Center, 1615 Noble Street.

Anniston-area residents are invited to bring 2 to 3 bags or file boxes of paper materials to be shredded. It’s important to note that 3-ring binders, spiral binders, and plastic, metal or household trash will NOT be accepted for shredding.

Shredding personal documents, including old bank statements, canceled checks, credit card offers, and any paperwork containing account numbers and Social Security numbers, is highly recommended to help protect against identity theft.

“AARP has launched the Fraud Watch Network, a national campaign to fight fraud and ID theft and give consumers access to information about how to protect themselves and their families, “said AARP Alabama Interim State Director Candace Williams. “AARP Alabama is excited to be working with WBRC Fox 6 and Secure Destruction Services on this Shred-A-Thon, and to raise awareness of the dangers of identity theft, fraud and scams right here in Anniston. Working together, we can fight back against these crimes.”

While the Shred-A-Thon is free to the community, a non-perishable food donation to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is being encouraged. Volunteers from Cornerstone Church will be at the Shred-A-Thon accepting those food donations.
