AARP Alabama Statement: Montgomery Circuit Court Ruling a Positive Step Forward for Alabama Consumers

AARP Alabama’s Interim State Director, Candace Williams, issued the following statement on behalf of AARP Alabama, following the dismissal of a suit by payday lenders seeking to block creation of a state database:

“We are very pleased by the court’s ruling, which is a positive step forward in protecting Alabama consumers from predatory lenders. Creation of a state database of borrowers will mean that vulnerable Alabamians can be protected from incurring endless cycles of debt from which they cannot escape. Capping the amount that can be borrowed by an individual consumer will protect our people and communities from the tremendous personal and community-wide economic damage that these predatory lenders inflict all across our state.”

“Along with numerous other community and faith-based organizations throughout our state, AARP Alabama will continue to advocate for legislation that will cap interest rates, which are currently still as high as 456% APR for payday loans. We look forward to working toward that goal in the 2015 legislative session.”
