AARP Chapter News – Spotlight on Spokane 384

Hands-Icon-182x162
By Mary "Scotty" Loaiza, Chapter Secretary

Spokane, Washington AARP Chapter 384 is awesome due to our dedicated Committee Chairpersons!   Our officers do a fine job but our Chairpersons are the glue making us a successful Chapter.

Each month this is why:

Membership, Dolores Kagi, keeps track of total membership (80 and counting) and reminds us to invite new people to join.  And, she supplies all with name tags.

Telephone Chair, Louise Branson calls those listed to remind of meeting, bakery  and speaker for the month.  She averages 70 calls each month.  In addition she sends birthday, sympathy and get well cards.

Dr. George Rice, Legislative & Health, is so knowledgeable and willing to travel to Olympia to represent the Spokane area and report back to our Chapter.   That is how we are kept up to date with important items in legislation plus upcoming events, such as:  Scam Jam, September 9th; Senior Wellness LTC, September 13th; PED 19th Senior Conference, October 3rd & 4th.  Our Chapter will host a booth at the LTC event.

Dean Daly and Gwen Akers are the Chairpersons that raise money for our Chapter.  Dean handles the ticket sales for a drawing for Lucky Bucks.  Lucky Bucks, you buy 3 tickets for $1, at the end of meeting the lucky winner takes 50% of the money, the other 50% goes into our treasury.    And, our bakery is handled by Gwen.  Each meeting a few members provides something homemade, it is priced at $1.  We have banana bread, homemade pet treats, cookies, etc., and as you can guess it sells very quickly.  Even the wait staff purchases if they can beat our members to the table.   Plus we have a drawing for a free lunch.

And, last but not least, Loni Daly presents the membership with a quarterly newsletter.  This has a president’s message, list of speakers, events to come and birthdays.  A new feature this year is “Spotlight On” which Loni has a member write a short synopsis about themselves.   Also, she provides an updated roster each month including member names, address, phone, email and birthdate so members may contact each other.  Check out our 1st quarter 2014 newsletter (2) , 2nd quarter 2014 newsletter (2), and 3rd quarter 2014 AARP newsletter.

Our speakers range from people speaking on SCRAPS the animal shelter, Scuba Diving, Advances Directives and many other topics.  We are always open for suggestions.

We give our members a break in July and August from meetings.  However, this year we are going to host a Potluck Picnic, July 24th.   If you wish to join us, bring your favorite dish, table service.  It will be held at Franklin Park, Queen  & Division, Spokane, Washington at 12 noon.

In December we end the year with our Annual Bingo Party and lots of laughter.

Oh, by the way this is all for $3 annual dues!  What a bargain!!
