AARP Florida names two South Florida residents to top volunteer advisory board

Miami, Fla. – AARP Florida State Director Jeff Johnson has appointed South Florida residents Horacio Soberon-Ferrer and Kenneth Thomas, as members of the AARP Florida Executive Council, a group of top volunteer advisors leading the nation’s largest membership organization for people 50+ in the nation’s “grayest” state.

“AARP Florida is pleased that two people with such proven community commitment and leadership capability have agreed to serve in this important role,” said Johnson. “Both men are passionate about helping all Americans age with purpose and dignity.”

In his role as CFO at the Agency, Soberon-Ferrer is responsible for fiscal management, procurement and program budgeting and development of strategic initiatives. In his role as the agency’s lead for Healthy Aging Programs, he oversees evidence-based programs to help older adults stay active and in control of their lives.

Thomas has volunteered with AARP as an Advocate, Speakers Bureau member and Driver Safety Trainer for more than two years. He also currently serves as a volunteer for the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program and is the past- President of the non-profit Speak Up For Kids of Palm Beach County, which provides financial support to the GAL Program. Additionally, Ken volunteers with Florida's Senior Medicare Patrol, a program that educates seniors on how to avoid becoming victims of MEDICARE fraud and identity theft.

Soberon-Ferrer currently resides in Miami, FL.

Thomas is a native of (Colonial) Williamsburg, Virginia and has been married to his wife for 30 years. They have five children, nine grandsons and two great-grandchildren.
