AARP Foundation gears up for the 2015 tax season in Alabama

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is gearing up for the 2015 season in Alabama and is seeking District Coordinators, tax preparers, communication coordinators, trainers and greeters. Join Alabama’s team of 300 volunteers who provide a vital, free service for low-income individuals.

In 2014 alone, they prepared and filed more than 12,000 returns and helped people find extra savings and refunds. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service.

“This is a heartwarming and very rewarding service program,” said State Coordinator Tom DeLong. “Volunteers are trained, organized, and managed by AARP Foundation volunteers.”

District Coordinators are needed in the Huntsville, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Dothan areas. Familiarity with tax preparation is helpful, but not required. District Coordinators organize activities for the IRS Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program, administered by the AARP Foundation. Coordinators primarily work from home on personal computers. They also attend two state-wide meetings in Birmingham and Montgomery and attend other functions necessary for their work.

Tax preparer positions are available throughout the state. Prior experience isn’t required. You’ll receive IRS tax training using the latest tax preparation forms and software. The minimum service time requested is one 4- to 8-hour day a week for ten weeks, in addition to the study and training November through January.

In whatever role you choose to serve, you’ll be helping people in your own community with a much-needed service that’s free and individualized.
