AARP Georgia Announces 2017 Legislative Priorities

For more than 60 years, AARP® has been dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all as we age. AARP pursues these goals through advocacy led by the state offices. Our advocacy agenda works to enable individuals 50+ get the most out of life. AARP Georgia advocates on behalf of more than 1 million members across the state.

Increasing Access to Quality Healthcare

Many areas in the state of Georgia lack access to quality healthcare providers. AARP wants to ensure access for those who need it through:

  • Enactment of Interstate Licensure Compact for Nurses which will allow nurses to care across state lines. This no-cost, commonsense solution would ensure that patients have access to care for which nurses have been trained.
  • Increasing Access to Oral Health for residents in nursing homes by permitting licensed hygienists to provide regular cleanings under the supervision of a dentist, as currently allowed in 47 states.

Fighting for Financial Security for All

The expectation of a comfortable retirement is no longer a reality for far too many Americans. Instead, millions of people face the risk of running out of savings after they retire. More than 1.7 million Georgians do not have a way to save for retirement at work– that’s one out of two workers in the state. AARP is promoting a Work and Save plan, which:

  • Makes it easier for businesses to offer a way for employees to save via payroll deduction.
  • Is a practical solution that would help people build their own private retirement savings so they can take charge of their future and live independently as they age.

Supporting Family Caregivers

Family caregivers work hard to help their parents, spouses and other loved ones live independently at home and in the community. Many also juggle full- or part-time jobs and some are still raising their families. AARP is:

  • Urging immediate adoption of the Uniform Power of Attorney Act to help protect vulnerable adults and provide their caregivers with the tools they need to make important financial decisions.
  • Continuing to support the Family Care Act so family caregivers don’t have to worry about losing their pay – or losing their jobs – when they have to take time off to care for a loved one.

Helping People Stay in Their Own Homes and Communities

Older Georgians want to live independently at home and in the community rather than move to more costly institutions. AARP is working with a coalition of aging advocates to improve services to a growing senior population, and support their family caregivers, by:

  • Eliminating the Waiting Lists for Home and Community-Based Services
  • Increasing Funding for Transition Services
