Weekly Series Focuses on Important Issues to Inform Older Mainers about Policies in the American Health Care Act (AHCA)

Portland, Maine, June 19, 2017 — AARP Maine today launched “AHCA Spotlight: What It Means for You” to raise awareness of key policy proposals in the American Health Care Act (AHCA) that are being debated in the Senate and how they would hurt older Mainers. Over the next three weeks, AARP Maine will highlight different policy areas of concern including changes in the Individual Insurance Market, Medicaid, and Medicare.

“Currently, much of the discussion about this bill is taking place in the Senate behind closed doors,” said Lori Parham, AARP Maine State Director. “Our goal is to ensure Mainers understand the proposals being debated and how they could be impacted by them.”

The AHCA, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives in late May, would remove protections for people with preexisting health conditions, unfairly penalize older Americans ages 50-64 with an “age tax,” reduce funding for Medicare, and cut more than $800 billion from Medicaid, the primary payer of long term care, over 10 years.

The “AHCA Spotlight” campaign will include the release of videos of Mainers who will be impacted sharing their stories and sharing policy facts through multiple channels to raise awareness. The campaign will also provide information about how people can make their voices heard before any bill gets voted on. Older Mainers are also available to speak with media.
