SACRAMENTO, CA – At a ceremony today at AARP’s California office, Representative Doris Matsui was presented with the “Champion of 50+” award, acknowledging her leadership in creating safe communities by promoting transportation options through the Safe Streets Act, which ensures that streets and intersections are designed with adequate pedestrian safeguards in mind. The bill became law as a provision in the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST) Act.

“Congresswoman Matsui has been a consistent champion for livable communities throughout her time in office,” said AARP California Advocacy Manager Blanca Castro. “I am so proud to present this award on behalf of more than 38 million AARP members nationwide to acknowledge the Congresswoman’s important leadership in creating communities that are safe and accessible for people of all ages.”

“When our roadways are accommodating of pedestrians and cyclists, as well as motorists and transit riders, our entire community is stronger,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “In Congress, I will continue to fight for safe streets in our communities, so that residents of all ages remain well connected in Sacramento. I appreciate AARP’s continued partnership as we work together to ensure the positive transformation of our region now and into the future.”
