Today, AARP Nebraska State Director Connie Benjamin released the following statement on the Legislature’s failure to advance LB 887:

“AARP is dismayed by today’s failure to pass the Wellness in Nebraska Act. A filibuster by a small group of senators leaves 54,000 hardworking Nebraskans struggling to make ends meet without any affordable health care options. As a result, many are likely to face needless suffering and illness because they can’t afford to see a doctor.

While today’s outcome is disappointing, we will not stop fighting to ensure that all Nebraskans have access to affordable health care. An AARP survey conducted in 2013 shows that a strong majority of Nebraskans support action by our state government to reduce the number of people without health insurance. We have no reason to believe that the public feels differently today.

For the second year, a minority of state lawmakers have made the fiscally unsound decision to reject the return of $2.2 billion in federal tax dollars to Nebraska to meet the health care needs of Nebraskans.

The next opportunity to extend health coverage to uninsured Nebraskans will come in 2015. Before then, voters will elect a Governor and several state senators. As we do in every election cycle, AARP will inform voters about where the candidates stand on this issue and others of importance to our members and their families.”
