AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides free tax assistance and preparation at sites around Montana during tax season
Helena, Mont., Feb 11, 2013 – This year, AARP Foundation is again providing free tax assistance and preparation for taxpayers with low to moderate income through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, in its 46th year, is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention the older population. Taxpayers do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service.
“There’s no question, over the years the U.S. tax code has become more complicated and confusing,” said Joy Bruck, AARP Montana State President. “It is almost overwhelming nowadays for the average person to do their own taxes — and not everyone can afford to hire a tax preparer.”
“I have been using AARP Tax Aide for quite some time and I use it because it’s very handy and the tax preparers are very knowledgeable,” said Stephen Gerard of Missoula. “AARP Tax-Aide saves me not only time and money, but headaches as well.”
Last year in Montana, 188 AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers helped more than 10,080 Montanans file their federal and state tax returns. The program is offered at approximately 34 sites throughout the state including senior centers, libraries and other convenient locations.
Thanks to the efforts of the AARP Tax-Aide volunteers, the total dollar amount back in the pockets of Montanans amounted to more than $4.2 million last year.
“In this tough economy, it is extremely important to make sure that any tax credits or refunds are not overlooked – to someone on a fixed income, every dollar counts,” added Bruck. “AARP Tax-Aide helps seniors, as well as low to moderate income taxpayers of all ages, prepare their returns with substantially less stress.”
Nationwide in 2012, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide’s 36,000 volunteers at nearly 6,000 sites provided over 2.5 million people with free tax help. Taxpayers who used AARP Foundation Tax-Aide received $1.3 billion in income tax refunds and more than $233 million in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITCs).
