“I am very saddened to learn of Kika de la Garza’s passing. Texas has lost an exceptional leader and great statesman, and the world has lost a champion for progress.

“A proud son of the Rio Grande Valley, Congressman de la Garza served the people of our state well as a state legislator and then, from 1965 to 1997, as an influential member of Congress, where he was a founding member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

“Congressman de la Garza was a champion for social justice and opportunities for all people. He leaves behind a legacy of public leadership that’s an inspiration to all who seek to build a better world.”
