AARP Urges Consumers to Challenge Proposed UI Rate Increases

AARP is urging Connecticut residents to challenge a proposal by United Illuminating (UI) that would call for a 30%+ increase of electric distribution

Utility Rates

charges to the ratepayer over the next three years. The proposal also allows UI to increase its profits with a higher return on equity and a new “earnings sharing mechanism” giving the company’s shareholders an opportunity to earn even higher returns via an automatic revenue retention plan.

Residents can use their power and take action by attending an upcoming public hearing:

• Thursday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Bridgeport City Hall on 45 Lyon Terrace in Bridgeport
• Monday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at Kennedy Mitchell Hall of Records on 200 Orange Street in New Haven (Hearing Room G2)

Residents can ensure their voice is heard even if they are unable to attend a hearing by contacting the state’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) and tell them to reject the unfair and unreasonable rate request by UI.

“Connecticut has one of the highest rates for electricity in the country and the significant increase being proposed by UI will impact everyone, but especially seniors and those living on fixed or low-incomes,” said AARP Connecticut state advocacy director John Erlingheuser.

In a merger agreement with a Spanish company, UI agreed to freeze on their rates through December 31, 2016 and their customers received a $9.4 million bill credit in March 2016. However, UI has now requested regulators approve a $100 million rate increase only three months after this credit.

AARP is encouraging customers to challenge this utility rate increase proposal in order to ensure utility companies receive only what is fair and reasonable – so they can keep more of the money they’ve earned.
