Advocacy Volunteers Wanted from Central RVA, Southwest and Tidewater Areas

Are you looking for a way to get involved in your community and put your time, skills, and experience to work serving and helping others? Through AARP Virginia you can use your talents and creativity to make your local community a better place to live – and meet some new friends along the way!

AARP Virginia seeks members from across the state to volunteer on our State Advocacy Team.  Join a special group of individuals who are committed to influence leaders on issues that matter most to Virginians aged 50-plus. AARP Virginia provides trainings throughout the year with special focus on engaging during the annual General Assembly session. State advocacy volunteers must be energetic, committed to the goals and priorities of AARP, and able to work in a non-partisan manner. State Legislative Specialists are a specialized group of AARP members who are actively engaged in AARP’s efforts to influence leaders on the issues that matter most to the 50+ population.

State Legislative Specialist Responsibilities include:

∙     Alert the state office to events and political intelligence as learned.

∙     Provide testimony, speeches and general presentations on AARP priorities as needed.

∙     Send letters, e-mails, and/or make telephone calls to state legislators and regulators regarding AARP priorities upon request.

∙     Assist in the development and implementation of strategies and tactics needed to advance AARP priorities.

∙     Attend local and state-level activities such as meetings, conferences, media events, and public hearings in your region upon request.

∙     Meet with state legislators, at least annually, outside of the General Assembly session to discuss AARP priorities.

∙     Serve as a citizen advocate at the General Assembly during legislative session(s). This includes AARP special events such as Opening Day and Lobby Day.
