A new program aims to reshape health care in Alaska by developing leaders who integrate geriatrics with primary care.

The Alaska Geriatrics Interdisciplinary Leadership Development program is a partnership between the University of Alaska and Southcentral Foundation Nuka System of Care. The noncredit course provides insights into the needs of older adults and sharpens skills for health and behavioral health professionals, family caregivers and advocates. It can be custom designed for individual participants to focus, for example, on dementia.

Ken Helander, AARP state advocacy director, serves on the advisory committee.

The course runs Aug. 29 to Dec. 17, with a July 15 application deadline. There is no tuition, and travel support is available. For more information, contact Sheila Soule at sjsoule@uaa.alaska.edu or 907-264-6251.
