Thursday’s “Austin Livability Solutions” event is the latest of the nationally acclaimed AARP Livable Communities Solutions Forums and will be presented as part of the Image Austin speaker series.

The event – which is free and open to the public -- will feature Austin City Councilmember Ann Kitchen; Dr. Erica Garcia-Pittman of Austin’s Commission on Seniors, also of the University of Texas Dell Medical School; Dr. Philip Huang of the City of Austin; and Jana Lynott from AARP’s Public Policy Institute. The forum will be moderated by AustinUp Board Member Arnold Garcia.

Among various topics, the forum will bring attention to the AARP Livability Index, a breakthrough online resource that lets people, policymakers and the private sector assess how well their communities – down to the neighborhood level – meet the current and future needs of their residents of all ages. The index is a powerful tool for communities to adapt to the changing needs of its people, and gives individuals the ability to plan for what they will need as they get older.

The forum comes on the heels of significant local government action to make Austin a more livable place for people of all ages. Earlier this month, the Austin City Council approved a plan to help people “age in place.” The Age-Friendly Austin Action Plan – the first of its kind to be adopted by a Texas city – intends to bring about needed changes that will benefit older persons, families and children alike. Meanwhile, similar initiatives are underway in Fort Worth and other Texas cities.
