For an alarming number of Americans 50+, the worst downturn since the Great Depression and a slow recovery have made any opportunity feel distant, if not totally unattainable. This group faces choices and pressures unlike those of any other age group – choices no one could have prepared for – and those nearly nine million people 50+ who struggle every day to put food on the table need a voice and an advocate now more than ever.

January is beginning with a bang for AARP Maryland! The office was out in full force across the state over the last several days, assisting with a food drive in Sandy-affected Crisfield, MD and presenting a $50,000 check from the AARP Foundation, as well as maintaining a presence at the 2013 Maryland General Assembly kick-off.

AARP Maryland announced on Friday, January 4, that it formally intervened in Public Service Commission (PSC) Case No. 9311--where Pepco is asking the PSC to approve a rate increase as well as a surcharge. AARP Maryland is focused on preventing additional surcharges.

ReServe Maryland is helping continuing professionals age 55+ reinvest a career's worth of skills to strengthen their communities. ReServe Maryland connects the state’s nonprofits and public institutions (partners) to experienced professionals 55+ (ReServists) who want to give back. In exchange for a stipend paid by the partner organization, ReServists in Maryland work in a variety of capacities – from infrastructure to direct service – to help organizations stay on mission. ReServe Maryland supports its partners in building a stronger and more vibrant Maryland.
