AARP members and their families and friends can learn how to recognize and avoid scams at a free workshop on Thursday, Nov. 16. The event features Frank W. Abagnale, an expert on identity theft, forgery and embezzlement. The workshop will be at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel, 2620 W. Dunlap Ave., Phoenix.

For more than 40 years, Abagnale has advised the FBI on how to outsmart scammers. As an ambassador for the AARP Fraud Watch Network, he has taught people of all ages how to guard against fraud. He was a con man in his youth, and his exploits inspired the 2002 movie Catch Me If You Can.

The event begins with a community resource expo at 6 p.m., followed by Abagnale’s presentation at 7 p.m. The event is free, but registration is required at aarp.cvent.com/AZFWNAbagnale or by calling 877-926-8300 toll-free.
