Shred Those Sensitive Documents

Eager to do a spring cleaning of old financial statements as tax season winds down? If so, be careful when disposing of such documents.

Arizonans filed nearly 9,000 complaints of identity theft with the Federal Trade Commission in 2016. Consumers can fight back against fraud by destroying sensitive paperwork.

As part of a national AARP effort called Operation Stop Scams, AARP Arizona is sponsoring three free shredding events this month—in Prescott, April 21; Oro Valley, April 22; and Phoenix, April 29. Participants can bring up to four medium-size boxes of outdated banking, credit card and medical statements; documents containing Social Security and other account numbers; and preapproved credit card applications.
