Flying Eagles’ three-sport standout receives statewide honor
Brent Osborne of Beckley (WV) Woodrow Wilson High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 15.
A junior, Brent is a 3.85 g.p.a. student and serves as his class treasurer. His school activities include Student Government and French Club. He is the son of Jeff and Cheryl Osborne of Beckley.
In both his academic and athletic pursuits, Osborne has excelled at the Raleigh County school. He is a three-sport athlete, competing in football, basketball and baseball. He was a member of Beckley’s 2012 West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) State Football Playoff team, and is currently the starting quarterback for Coach John Lilly’s Flying Eagles. Osborne also competed for State Championships in basketball and baseball last season, as a member of Beckley’s teams that earned 2012 WVSSAC State Tournament berths.
On a community level, Brent is actively involved in volunteer and service activities. He has served as a coach and volunteer with Beckley-area Little League Baseball programs. He mentors youth as a staff volunteer for various youth football camps in the Raleigh County area, and is an active member of Memorial Baptist Church, where he assists with youth programs. His future aspirations are to earn his college degree and become a physical therapist.
During the 2013 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State each Friday night (9:30 – midnight) during the High School football season.
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
