Cougars’ volleyball captain receives statewide honor
Paige Lucas of Capital High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of October 6.
A senior, Paige is a 3.7 g.p.a. student. She is a National Honor Society member and a member of Capital High’s Student Council. She is the daughter of Don and Pam Lucas of Charleston.
A four-year starter for Coach Carolyn Taylor’s Capital Cougars volleyball team, Lucas is an outside hitter and two-year team captain. She was a member of Capital’s 2012 Sectional Championship squad that advanced to West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) Regional Tournament play; the Cougars’ first regional berth since a 2006 WVSSAC State Tournament appearance.
On a community level, Paige volunteers her time for many causes in the Kanawha Valley including Special Olympics West Virginia and the Kanawha/Charleston Humane Association. She has been actively involved in completing community service projects with Capital High Student Council and National Honor Society, and was a participant in 2013 United Way of Central West Virginia Day of Caring activities.
After completing her final year of high school, Lucas hopes to continue her athletic career on the collegiate level and pursue a forensic science degree.
During the 2013 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State each Friday night (9:30 – midnight) during the High School football season.
West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. Nomination forms may be completed online at http://wvmetronews.com/scholar-athlete-of-the-week – or are available at www.aarp.org/wv.
