Health & Wellbeing AARP’s focus during the 2014 Legislative Session will be strengthening the financial security of Minnesotans.  Whether nearing retirement, or putting their kids through college, AARP is fighting to put financial security within reach for Minnesotans who work hard and plan for their future. In order to strengthen the financial security of all Minnesotans, including unpaid family caregivers, and protect utility customers from unfair price increases and the possibility that they could lose land line telephone service, AARP is focusing on …

Health & Wellbeing Greetings! It’s Lynne again, with a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program  (SNAP) outreach message for the holiday season. As the weather transitions each fall, I find myself missing fresh berries, carrots and lettuce taken straight from my family’s garden.  This autumn, one of AARP Foundation’s SNAP outreach volunteers gave my transition from greens to squash, and berries to apples a new perspective.  This woman, whom I’ll call Anne, receives SNAP benefits to supplement her modest income from Social Security retirement.  While …

Earlier this fall, I joined the AARP Minnesota staff for a service project.  Since my work has helped my colleagues learn about hunger among Minnesotans aged 50 and older, we decided to focus AARP’s annual Day of Service on providing healthy food to individuals in need.   Since promoting SNAP as a tool to maintain a nutritious diet is …

Health & Wellbeing It’s Sunday afternoon and I was twerked off because I needed to travel for work. Again. I just returned home Thursday and here I was, just two days later, headed for Atlanta and the AARP Annual Life@50 event. I have been to Atlanta in the past, but hadn’t really experienced much of the city. Once there, despite my reticence, I decided to use the opportunity to explore. I’ve taken to using motorized scooters to make it easier for me to …

Navigating Open Enrollment Season

Health & Wellbeing October in Minnesota means fall colors, falling temps and lamenting the Vikings and Gophers.  It also means open enrollment for both those on Medicare and those not yet eligible. 2013 offers a new wrinkle for health care consumers.  At the same time that those on Medicare are free to explore other prescription drug or supplemental insurance plans, those not yet 65 are also going through open enrollment in the state’s new online health care marketplace called MNsure. With parallel open …
