CHARLOTTE - Is your neighborhood walkable? If you lost your mobility and could not drive, would you be able to connect to the services that you need?

As the country’s population ages, the impact is felt at the community level. That is why creating livable communities is a top priority for AARP. And a livable community is one which accommodates people of all ages and abilities with safe streets and sidewalks so they can connect to the community.

Last year, AARP in Charlotte organized Walkable Charlotte Week to help raise awareness of the issue and help make long term strides towards making Charlotte a more livable community. Working in collaboration with the Charlotte Department of Transportation and others, Walkable Charlotte Week illustrated why walkability is an essential component of a livable community in that it is a fundamental conduit between the home and all that the community has to offer.

This fall AARP will be participating with the Mecklenburg County Health Department and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools on Walk to School Day. On October 8, AARP will join these partners and others to help raise awareness of the issue of walkability as an intergenerational issue.
