Clarksburg Notre Dame High School's Rachel Rogers Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Fighting Irish three-sport student-athlete earns statewide honor

Rachel Rogers of Notre Dame High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 15.

A senior, Rachel is a 4.4 g.p.a. AP Honors student. She serves as Student Body President and Key Club WV District Convention Chair. Rachel has participated in the National Youth Science Camp and Tom Dunne Energy Leadership Conference. She has also earned the EQT Student of Excellence Scholarship Award for Harrison County. Rachel is the daughter of Randal and Sharry Rogers of Grafton.

Rachel has been a three-sport performer for the Fighting Irish. In cross country, she recently earned a Top 20 finish in the 2015 WVSSAC Class AA/A State Championship Meet.

In basketball, Rachel is a two-time All-Harrison County, All-Mason Dixon Conference and Honorable Mention All-State honoree. As a member of the Notre Dame swim team, she is a three-time State Meet qualifier and has earned All-Harrison County honors.

In her community, Rachel participates in various volunteer and community service activities with Key Club International and Taylor County 4-H. She is a youth sports volunteer with Upward Basketball and the “Every Child a Swimmer” program, which provides free swimming lessons. Furthermore, Rachel has served as a volunteer with the Disability Action Center Summer Camp in Fairmont, WV, and as a mission volunteer with Transform 360 faith-based medical mission in the Dominican Republic.

Following graduation, Rachel plans to pursue a degree in environment science and hopes to attend law school.

During the 2015 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. Nominations for the 2015 Scholar Athlete program have closed.
