Communication Internship at AARP Idaho

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student looking to gain real-world experience with a leading nonprofit? We’re looking for you! AARP Idaho is seeking a social media communications intern for summer and fall 2015. This is a paid opportunity. This position will be responsible for maintaining and growing the social media accounts for both the AARP Idaho and AARP Montana state offices.

Responsibilities:

• Learning AARP’s mission, culture, history and projects with special emphasis on understanding AARP membership and the 50+
• Creating and updating posts, profiles and pages for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram through the Spredfast marketing platform – posts to be scheduled to run daily, including weekends
• Identifying and incorporating new or additional social media channels
• Collaborating with cross-functional AARP teams to develop marketing and communications plans that leverage the social media space
• Tracking the growth and impact of social media channels and suggesting action steps to increase influence and relevance
• Formulating social media plans and executing those plans based on the expectations and guidance of the Idaho and Montana offices
• Attending and live tweeting from selected events
• Identifying how social media fits into AARP’s strategy to build long-lasting relationships by providing value to members and partners
• Developing and executing a paid social media advertising campaigns designed to increase impact and relevance across all incorporated social media outlets
• Creating content and posting to the Idaho and Montana blog pages
• Assisting with the development of traditional media content and outreach to media partners
• Responsible for serving as an “AARP brand steward” by protecting the AARP brand and its reputation through the responsible use of social media
• Share and comment on other people’s posts on the AARP Idaho and AARP Montana pages, but also on the pages of others that we want to engage – i.e. community partners, elected officials, opinion leaders, media, etc.

 

Qualifications

This position is essentially the online face and voice of AARP Idaho and AARP Montana. As such, there is a tremendous amount of responsibility associated with this assignment. The first challenge for the successful candidate will be to integrate into the culture of AARP and quickly familiarize themselves with the work, mission and projects of each AARP office.
The intern will receive detailed oversight from the Associate State Directors for Communications from Idaho and Montana. They will also be expected to assimilate with other office staff on an as need basis as projects warrant. While supervision will always be thorough, it is expected that over time the person in this position will gain a certain level of trust and autonomy and be able to work independently.
This individual has the potential to directly influence AARP’s impact and relevance in Idaho and Montana. As such, a variety of metrics will be used to empirically measure and evaluate the intern’s progress and ultimate success.

• Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in communications, digital strategy, social media, public relations, journalism or related field
• Available to work 15-20 hours per week
• Solid foundation and knowledge of social media channels from a professional application
• Excellent written and verbal communication, strong editing skills
• Creativity with an eye for design
• Ability to develop a detailed and professional marketing plan
• Proficient in the use of various technological tools including tablets, smartphones, computers, and other standard office equipment
• Proficiency in Microsoft products
• Ability to deal with uncertainty and ambiguity
• Ability to work independently
• Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is not required but is a plus
• Must have a high level of intellectual curiosity and ability to generate new and innovative ideas
• Ability to identify a target market and uniquely speak to that audience
• Basic photography skills are a required
• Being able to shoot and edit compelling video is a plus but not required
