Long-time AARP Rhode Island volunteer Ruth Thumbtzen of Newport will be honored, along with fellow Community Service Award winner Claudia Linhares of Tiverton and Outstanding Youth Volunteer award winner Jonathan Klinker of Tiverton, during a dinner and awards banquet on Tuesday, April 19, at OceanCliff in Newport.

NEWPORT — Ruth Barge Thumbtzen taught physical education and health at Thompson Middle School for 30 years, was a community liaison for Salve Regina University for 10 years after she retired from teaching, and has been involved with many local nonprofit organizations throughout her incredibly active career.

Her favorite quote says a lot about what kind of woman she is: “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.”

She has a reputation for getting things done, so many organizations recruit her for board memberships and other tasks. The number of organizations Thumbtzen has served, and her seemingly boundless energy, impressed the members of The Newport Daily News Community Service Award Committee, who selected this year’s winners from among nearly 20 nominations.
