Dolphins Team Up to Help Those in Need

Hunger (AARP photo)

Floridians now have another reason to root for the Miami Dolphins: The NFL team is working with the AARP state office and AARP Foundation to help older South Floridians in need.

The collaborative effort focuses on the foundation’s four priority issues—hunger, isolation, income and housing. Volunteers gather once a month on a Saturday, and quarterly for larger community service events. In September, AARP staff and volunteers teamed up with Dolphins fans to pack 1 million meals for hungry South Florida residents.

Some 14 percent of Floridians age 65 and older live in poverty; 7 percent of those 50 and older are at risk of hunger.
