Donald Miller Honored with 2016 AARP Oklahoma Andrus Award for Community Service

Clinton resident Donald Miller’s dedication to helping make life better for others was recognized as he was named the recipient of the 2016 AARP Oklahoma Andrus Award for Community Service. The award – the highest honor given by AARP – was presented at a luncheon held in Oklahoma City. Miller was one of four nominees for the honor.

AARP State Director Sean Voskuhl said, “Donald Miller’s generous and giving spirit exemplifies the best of Oklahoma and we honor his commitment to community and service. AARP volunteers, like Mr. Miller, positively impact the lives of thousands of Oklahomans each year.”

Donald Miller is a man known for his service to others whether it is his country, community, or church. A United States Air Force veteran for 23 years, Miller also served 10 years with the U.S. Army Civil Service in Germany. Until retirement, Miller was employed by Clinton Regional Hospital. Now, his days are filled by helping others. He serves on the Clinton AARP Board, Clinton Senior Transportation Committee, and the Custer County Election Board. In addition, Miller sings in the choir and plays in the bell choir at the United Methodist Church and is a past Adjunct of the local American Legion Chapter. Miller is also the Clinton AARP Chapter President.

AARP Oklahoma State President Joe Ann Vermillion quoted Bernard Meltzer when addressing the more than 125 guests in attendance and applauding volunteers who give so freely of their time and talents saying, “There is no better exercise for your heart, than reaching down and helping to lift someone up.”

Other Andrus Award nominees recognized included: Marie Hesser and Vickie Phillips of Stillwater; Bill Hill of Tulsa and Jan Skinner of Tulsa.
