Be empowered to prevent diabetes

Tips to save on health expenses

AARP Delaware and the YMCA of Delaware have teamed up to deliver health education and diabetes prevention, aimed at improving the health and well-being of Delawareans age 50+ and their families.  The partnership is part of a national effort, whereby the two organizations will work together to reach a variety of cultures and communities with information about preventing diabetes and staying healthy.

According to the YMCA, you may be at risk for prediabetes or diabetes if you have 2 or more of these risk factors. This does not mean you have diabetes, you will need a blood test to confirm if you have diabetes:

  • You are 45 years of age or older.
  • Your parent or sibling has type 2 diabetes.
  • You are physically active fewer than 2 times per week.
  • You ever gave birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds and/or had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes).
  • Your blood pressure is 140/90 or higher, or you have been told you have high blood pressure
  • You have been told your cholesterol levels are elevated

If you have any of the risk factors above you might be eligible to sign up for the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program.*

In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach facilitates a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity, and other behavior changes over the course of one year. The program is designed to help people reduce their risk factors for developing type II diabetes by increasing physical activity and reducing body weight.
