Fairmont Senior High School’s Jake Abbott Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Jake Abbott of Fairmont Senior High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 11.

A senior, Jake is a 4.14 g.p.a. AP Honors student. He is a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society, Science Honorary and Key Club. He is the son of J.L. and Mit Abbott of Fairmont.

A team captain and starting quarterback/linebacker for his father, Coach J.L. Abbott’s Polar Bears football team, Jake is a two-time All-State selection, earning first team defensive honors in 2015 and special mention recognition in 2014. He is a two-time first team All-Big Ten Athletic Conference and All County selection.

A three year member of Coach Mark Delligatti’s Polar Bear wrestling program, Jake earned 2016 Big Ten Conference and Region One championship titles en route to a state runner-up finish in the 195 lb. weight class at the 2016 WVSSAC State Wrestling Championships.

On a community level, Jake is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Marion County area. He serves as a Special Olympics peer mentor volunteer, and as a coach and volunteer with youth football programs in the Fairmont area. He has served as a volunteer in United Way Food Drives, and has joined his Fairmont Senior classmates in supporting the #SimonStrong campaign to raise awareness and support Marion County youngster Simon Rohaly’s fight against Neuroblastoma.

Jake hopes to continue his athletic career on the collegiate level. He is interested in pursuing a degree in political science or legal studies, and attending law school following the completion of his undergraduate work.

During the 2016 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
