As part of the Minnesota Stop Abuse and Financial Exploitation of Elders (MN S.A.F.E. Elders) coalition, AARP helped fund a documentary called Elder Victims: Abused, Exploited, Alone. The video explores the challenges of identifying and preventing financial exploitation, physical abuse and neglect of the elderly.

Elder abuse is underreported, often because of family ties between victim and perpetrator. Even so, there were nearly 30,000 cases investigated by social services agencies in Minnesota last year.

In addition, the coalition developed guidelines for law enforcement officers to identify signs of elder abuse at crime scenes and provided sentencing guidelines for prosecutors.
