Fraud Watch Wednesday Scam Alert: Beware Free, Public Wi-Fi Where Scammers May Be Lurking

The AARP Fraud Watch Network Scam Alert for June 22, 2016.

Using public Wi-Fi means you’re potentially sharing personal information with criminals.

When you’re on free public Wi-Fi at a gym, a hotel, or at a coffee shop, the information you’re transferring between your device and the website you’re accessing is easily tapped into by anyone who is on the same free, public Wi-Fi network.

This leaves passwords, usernames, and account numbers vulnerable, and means that any scam artist can see them and what you’re doing. Surf safely: Stick to browsing the web and checking news when on public Wi-Fi. Avoid online banking, checking email, making credit card purchases or even posting on Facebook on public Wi-Fi.

Be a fraud fighter!

If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam.

Report scams to your local law enforcement.

Contact the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork or 1-877-908-3360 to report a scam or for more information on scam and fraud prevention.
