Going Local!

herb

Earlier this year AARP South Carolina launched a campaign to move our advocacy efforts into a more local arena. AARP SC volunteers are crucial to our advocacy work and can often best accomplish our goals by working in their local communities. To kick off this effort, we have worked in Anderson and Beaufort counties with local legislators.

Anderson -- Hats off to Anderson LAT volunteers John and Genevieve Brown. Earlier this summer they represented AARP SC at the Independent Mail 2016 Voices & The Voters meet and greet with the Candidates in Anderson. Approximately 200 voters attended the event. John and Genevieve were able to talk with the candidates for the state House and Senate. And of course, everyone knew the Browns. Thanks John and Genevieve for spreading the work about family caregivers and work and save.

Beaufort/Bluffton/Hilton Head -- Thanks to our Beaufort county LAT volunteers Joe Bogacz, Jim and Jan Cary, Rich and Kathy Garlock, Paul Russo, Portia Gilliard and Pegi Newton for representing AARP SC at the June Beaufort county legislative delegation meeting. Joe did an excellent job in presenting the Capitol Caregiver award to Representative Bill Herbkersman at the delegation meeting. Following the delegation meeting AARP SC hosted a reception for the delegation, and our volunteers mixed and mingled with legislators. To quote, Joe Bogacz, “I feel that both the award and reception went extremely well and allowed us good conversation time with the delegation which will pay future dividends.”

Stay tuned for events coming your way. We are working with other delegations in hopes of making presentations and hosting events in other local areas.
