Scott SD CapitolMy South Dakota Adventure – by AARP South Dakota Interim State Director

Hello, I’m Scott Musser, Associate State Director for Advocacy and Outreach at the Illinois AARP office, but for the month of July – I’m in South Dakota serving as the Interim State Director while Sarah Jennings is on renewal (a special sabbatical AARP offers employees).

This is my first time in South Dakota, and I am really enjoying the opportunity to get to know and work with the great staff and volunteers.  Last week Leni Healy and I went to Mission and Pierre as part of our You’ve Earned a Say community conversation tour on Social Security and Medicare.  I got to meet AARP South Dakota State President Dennis Eisnach – who did a great job leading the two conversations and also in presenting before a special Legislative Policy Council hearing on older worker issues at the Capitol.

Scott Corn PalaceLeni was a great tour guide during our trip, telling me all about South Dakota history and even giving me a tour of the Capitol building – which included bumping into Governor Daugaard.

This week, I’ll be hitting the road with Erik Nelson for a community conversation in Philip and then two more in Custer and Rapid City the following week.  Having gotten my picture take outside of the world’s only Corn Palace – I’m looking forward to adding stops at Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands and of course, Wall Drug to my South Dakota adventures.

I’ve been enjoying my non-work time exploring the Sioux Falls area, and sampling the local food and entertain scene.  South Dakota is a very beautiful state – and full of some of the nicest people I have ever met.  So far this has been a great adventure.
