An estimated 86 million Americans nationwide are currently living with prediabetes, that is more than 1 in 3 U.S. adults.  Of this population, only about ten percent are aware they have the condition. Individuals with prediabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years unless they take steps to prevent or delay the disease. Delaware is ranked the 17 th highest in the nation for people with diabetes in the general population, 6.9 out of every 100 adults in Delaware has Diabetes.

Research by the National Institutes of Health shows that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by about 70 percent individuals age 60 and over, and by 58 percent for those under age 60. The YMCA’s DPP offers individuals at high risk for developing the disease tools for healthy living, including knowledge about healthy behaviors, weight loss. The social support and connection the program provides has helped participants maintain their good progress.
