Hundreds Shred Personal Documents at Oklahoma City, Shawnee and Tulsa Operation Stop Scams Events

Operation Stop Scams POP 5.4.2017

The AARP Fraud Watch Network successfully brought fraud-fighting efforts to Oklahomans across the state with three, free Operation Stop Scams events in Oklahoma City, Shawnee and Tulsa in April. Operation Stop Scams free shredding events allowed 495 Oklahomans to safely shred nearly 30,000 pounds of sensitive documents.

AARP OK would like to thank our event co-hosts,  OK Attorney General's Office, The Community Market of Pottawatomie County, the News on 6, and the amazing AARP OK volunteers who helped make these events a tremendous success. One of many highlights was Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter conducting a “swearing in” ceremony and charging AARP Fraud Fighters to be educators, watchdogs and advocates to help protect Oklahomans from con artists and scammers.

“At the end of tax-filing season many Oklahomans clean out old financial documents which often contain personal information. Our Operation Stop Scams shredding events provided a safe, convenient way for people to destroy this sensitive paperwork,” said JoeAnn Vermillion, AARP Oklahoma State President.

The AARP Fraud Watch Network launched in 2013 as a free resource for people of all ages. The website provides information about frauds and scams, prevention tips from experts, an interactive scam-tracking map, fun educational quizzes, and video presentations featuring Fraud Watch Network Ambassador Frank Abagnale. Users may sign up for “Watchdog Alert” emails that deliver breaking scam information, or call a free helpline at 877-908-3360 to speak with volunteers trained in fraud counseling.
