Did you know one in eight South Dakotans is food insecure – meaning they don’t have enough – or nutritious enough food to eat? In South Dakota, nearly 20% of the 50+ population lives below the poverty line – earning less than $1600 each month. Many of those individuals, are part of the 9 million people 50 and older in America, who face the risk of hunger.
They’re our friends, our neighbors, our family, and they don’t want to be a burden, so they suffer in silence.
AARP South Dakota teamed up with KELOLAND news to sponsor Hunger: Feeding the Need – A KELOLAND news special report to help highlight the issue of hunger in our state.
Since 2011, AARP South Dakota along with our volunteers have taken an active role in helping fight hunger, by packing food boxes with Feeding South Dakota for seniors, and holding food drives at events across the state. Together we’re working to make sure no one, of any age, has to go hungry. AARP Drive to End Hunger Spokesperson Jeff Gordon is even taking note of the work we’ve done!
Then, tell us what you did to help end hunger!
