Interfaith Outreach- African American/ Black Communities Come Together

MLK 1

AARP’s African American/Black  outreach is centered around driving relevance within the African American/Black community and beyond.  One way AARP accomplishes this is through our faith-based initiative being implemented across Pennsylvania, with special emphasis in Philadelphia county.   AARP effectively provides relevant information and resources to African American/Black communities in many faith-based settings, familiar and trusted.

In Pennsylvania AARP staff and volunteers are hard at work offering resources to interfaith communities by giving them the information to make important financial, health and lifestyle decisions.

In recent activities AARP Pennsylvania celebrated the historical legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this year, demonstrating the positive impact of volunteering in local communities.

For several years, the historic Pinn Memorial Baptist Church in Philadelphia has welcomed AARP Pennsylvania to take part in their annual day of service activities.  AARP volunteers joined over 200 participants to support community service projects such as organizing school supplies for local children in homeless shelters, to organizing personal care items for seniors in long term care facilities across the city.  AARP was also in position to hand out our latest information on financial security and the Affordable Care Act.

Continuing the volunteerism spirit in Pittsburgh, AARP volunteer teams have been long- time sponsors of a local community breakfast in the area. This year AARP volunteers joined the 14 th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast, honoring local high school youth for their dedication to community service.  Over 170 community leaders joined keynote speaker Tony Norman, Associate Editor for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  AARP volunteers also shared a power point presentation displaying photos of our partnership over the years for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. annual breakfast.
