Did you know that for older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury and hospital admissions for trauma and death?  This isn't meant to scare anyone--just to let you know about a great resource for fall prevention brought to you by the Salt lake County Health Department's Injury Prevention Program.

The program is called, "Stepping On," a well-researched prevention course that can help you become aware of how to stay safe at home and in your travels.

There is a "get-acquainted" session on April 20 at 2:30 that will provide an overview of the program; the actual workshop meet for two hours a week for seven weeks beginning on April 27.

Topics include:

  • Simple and fun balance and strength exercises
  • The role of vision in keeping your balance
  • How medication can contribute to falls
  • Ways to stay safe in and around your community'
  • How to check your home for safety
When I'm walking, I still think, 'lift your feet, walk heel-toe.'  I have stopped falling outside!  It has made me more aware of the way I walk." --Grace

Trained health educators from the Salt Lake County Health Department teach the course, with local guest speakers including physical therapists, pharmacists, vision practitioners, and community safety experts.  People who can most benefit from the workshops include those over age 65 who have had a fall in the past year, are fearful of falling, and live independently.
