Congratulations to Mary Ann Fenske, Wichita and Barbara Turner, Wichita for placing first and second in the 2013 Kansas State Fair Senior Spelling Bee sponsored by AARP Kansas. The first place winner received $150 in cash and gift cards and the second place winner received $65 in cash and gift cards.
Spelling bees aren’t new to either woman as Barbara has competed and placed twice in the Wichita Spelling Bee (and won 1st place this year) and Mary Ann is a veteran speller competing in the Wichita Spelling Bee, the Kansas State Fair Senior Spelling Bee and the AARP National Spelling Bee—all numerous times. She placed 3rd in the AARP National Spelling Bee which was held this past July in Wyoming.
Mary Ann, 65, is a retired speech pathologist who has been competing in spelling bees for the last five years. Barbara, 56, is employed by the Workforce Center in Wichita and competed in spelling bees while in elementary school.
AARP Kansas extends its admiration to both women and all the participants who competed in the Kansas State Fair Senior Spelling Bee this year.
