A senior, Tyler is a 3.8 g.p.a. student and a member of the National Honor Society. His school activities include Eagles Nest and the Prom planning committee. He is the son of William and Kara Vernatter of Peach Creek.

In both his academic and athletic pursuits, Vernatter has excelled at the Logan County school. He is a two-year, two-way starter for Coach Gary Mullins’ Wildcats football team, playing fullback, linebacker and also seeing special teams action. Vernatter was also a member of the Wildcats’ team that advanced to the WVSSAC Class AAA State Football Playoffs in 2011.

On a community level, Tyler is actively involved in volunteer and service activities. He has served as a volunteer with Geri-Olympics and Special Olympics West Virginia. He is a peer volunteer with Logan High School’s Freshman Academy, and mentored youth as a staff volunteer with the Logan youth football camp in 2012.

After completing his final year of high school, Vernatter hopes to earn a college athletic scholarship and pursue an Engineering degree.

During the 2013 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State each Friday night (9:30 – midnight) during the High School football season.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. Nomination forms may be completed online at http://wvmetronews.com/scholar-athlete-of-the-week – or are available at www.aarp.org/wv.
