heart-candy_flickr-Flare

OK all you singletons, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching.  Instead of waking up with dread this year, why not take the opportunity to embrace the spirit of the day and just celebrate LOVE.  Whether you are single by choice, actively looking, or just beginning to think about dating again, AARP has tips and resources that can help you make the most of your Valentine's Day, and every day.

Looking for dating advice and inspiration?  We know it can be hard to get back out there.  From the new rules of Dating in the Digital Age, to advice on handling the first “sleep-over”, we’ve got you covered!  AARP’s Dating expert, Nancy Davidoff Kelton found the love of her life online.  According to Nancy, she “kissed a lot of iguanas before finding her prince.” Now happily married, Nancy culls her experiences to offer tried, true and effective dating advice for women over age 50.

Let AARP Dating help you find your future Valentine.

If online dating isn’t your cup of tea, how about in-person speed dating? Be sure to check out the heart-warming and humorous movie, The Age of Love, which follows some intrepid senior speed-daters as they put their hearts – and everything else – on the line to find love.  The film’s director, Steven Loring was inspired to make the movie by his desire to confront stereotypes and give voice to older adults who’ve found their hearts and desires haven’t dimmed with age. According to Loring, “Speed dating for prewar babies introduced me to such brave, remarkable characters and a story so comic and poignant, it seemed the perfect way to explore what love means to all of us, and how it endures." Watch the trailer and attend a full screening of the film at AARP’s National Member Event and Expo, Life@50+, this May 8-10 in Boston.  BONUS: If you register for  Life@50+ on Valentine’s Day, you’ll receive not only your registration but one FREE ticket to our Life@50+ dance party featuring The SPINNERS and MARY WILSON of the Supremes. Register online or call 1-800-650-6839 and provide the promo code "SWEET50" to take advantage of this great offer.

If you’re not quite ready for one-on-one dating yet, or you are just happy to be single, there are plenty of local Meet-Ups, singles events and hotspots in Connecticut where groups of single people who share similar interests get together in a fun and casual atmosphere.  Check out The Savvy Singles Guide to Connecticut from Connecticut Magazine for a list of local resources.

So what are you waiting for?  Whether you’re single and loving it, considering a dip into the dating pool, or ready to dive right in, the important thing is to get out there and embrace it, and most importantly, have fun!  Here’s hoping this Valentine’s Day is as special as you are!
