Future Caregivers Get a Chance to Plan

HOME CARE SPOT

To help support family caregivers, AARP will hold a free Prepare to Care event Nov. 6 in Poplar Bluff. Participants will learn how to develop a caregiving plan, access in-home services, navigate Medicare and deal with legal issues.

“Many families avoid discussing a loved one’s future care because they don’t want to think about the possible changes ahead,” said Diane Hall, associate state director for community outreach. “Even so, preparation is essential.”

In 2010, there were 6.9 potential caregivers ages 45-64 for every Missourian age 80-plus. The ratio is projected to decline to 3.8 caregivers per Missourian 80-plus by 2030, and could fall as low as 2.9 to 1 by 2050.

The half-day event includes lunch, and registration is required. To register, call 800-392-8771 or 573-335-3331. Can’t attend? Find caregiving tips online at aarp.org/caregiving.
