Easing the Burden on Family Caregivers

AARP is urging state lawmakers to consider a pair of reforms that would help the estimated 195,000 family caregivers in Nebraska.

During the legislative session that begins Jan. 6, AARP Nebraska will support a tax credit for family caregivers who meet certain financial criteria. That bill was carried over from the 2015 session.

AARP also is backing the Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act, which would help prepare family caregivers when a patient transitions from hospital to home. At least 18 states have enacted similar bills.

AARP members can get involved by meeting with lawmakers, participating in lobby days and testifying at hearings. For details, email Mark Intermill, AARP associate state director for advocacy, at mintermill@aarp.org or call him at 866-389-5651 toll-free.
