North Marion High's Trey Toland Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete Of The Week

Huskies' student athlete earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor

Trey Toland of North Marion High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 5.

A senior, Toland is a 4.2 g.p.a. AP honors student. He is Student Body President, a National Honor Society member, a Promise Scholarship qualifier, and his activities include Senior Leadership Club, Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership program, Military Club, Student Newspaper and the school’s Broadcasting program. He has participated in the American Legion Mountaineer Boys State program. Trey is the son of Jeremy and Jamie Toland of Mannington.

Toland is a four-year varsity football letterwinner at North Marion, where he plays nose guard for Coach Daran Hays’ Huskies. As a member of North Marion’s tennis team, Toland has earned a Big 10 Conference doubles championship, as well as WVSSAC regional titles in singles and doubles play.

On a community level, Toland is actively involved in volunteer and service activities in the Marion County area through his school and church, Oakhurst Church of Christ. He serves as a volunteer with the Mannington Food Pantry, Marion County Special Olympics and the Mannington District Fair. When major flooding impacted parts of the state in 2016 and 2017, Toland organized flood clean-up crews to assist with relief efforts at Camden-on-Gauley and in his home community of Mannington.

Following graduation, Toland hopes to attend the United States Naval Academy and plans to pursue a degree in chemistry. He would like to become a commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps, and hopes to play Sprint Football on the collegiate level.

During the 2017 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
