Oak Glen High School's Jayson Chappell Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Golden Bears’ two-sport student-athlete earns AARP/MetroNews statewide honor

Jayson Chappell of Oak Glen High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 27. He is the 14th and final West Virginia high school student athlete to be recognized during the 2016 statewide awards program.

A senior, Jayson is a 3.82 g.p.a. student and a member of National Honor Society. He serves as Key Club President, Student Council Treasurer, and is a member of the Business Club and Pep Club. Jayson has participated in American Legion Mountaineer Boys State and the Weirton Area Chamber Youth Leadership Program. Jayson is the son of Earl and Michelle Chappell of New Cumberland.

A two-sport athlete, Jayson is a four-year letter winner with Head Coach Jerry Everly’s Golden Bears golf program. He is a four-year All-Academic Ohio Valley Athletic Conference honoree. Jayson is also a three-year member of the Golden Bears basketball program. He is the 2016 West Virginia state male winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

On a community level, Jayson is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in the Hancock County area through his school and Point Pleasant United Methodist Church. He is actively engaged in youth service activities through his participation in local and state 4-H programs.

Jayson serves as a volunteer with several community organizations including American Cancer Society Relay for Life, New Cumberland Food Closet, Hancock County Animal Shelter, Adopt-A-Trail at Tomlinson Run State Park, Hancock County Old Time Fair, Project Linus, and the Elks Hoops Shoot program.

Following graduation, Jayson plans to pursue a degree in aviation and hopes to become a professional pilot.

During the 2016 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete was selected as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized each week on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs Friday nights on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. AARP West Virginia and MetroNews thank everyone who submitted nominations for this year’s awards program.
