Medicare Open Enrollment time is here again…a time for older Americans on Medicare to evaluate their current plans and consider changing or adding options for their 2014 coverage. The Medicare Open Enrollment period runs from October 15th through December 7th. Changes or additions made will take effect January 1, 2014.

This year there is another health care sign up event going on in America — enrollment for the Health Insurance Marketplaces under the Affordable Care Act.  This enrollment does NOT impact Americans who are on Medicare, or who may have added supplemental coverage and drug plans to their Medicare coverage.

While there is a great deal of media attention regarding the Affordable Health Care enrollment, seniors over 65 do NOT enroll in Health Insurance Marketplaces, since this coverage is offered only to those who may not have healthcare plans at work, or through other organizations.

When you hear news or commentary on the Affordable Health Care law – sometimes called Obamacare -remember this is NOT Medicare or Medicare related.

However, it is important to pay attention to the Medicare Enrollment Period, and make your choices before December 7th, at which time your 2013 plan will “roll over” and not be changeable again until October 2014.
