Parkersburg South High School's Nick Sanders Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Patriots' two-sport student athlete earns statewide honor

 

Nick Sanders of Parkersburg South High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 20.

A senior, Nick is a 4.25 g.p.a. honors student. He is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, and has been a three-year Principal’s List honoree at Parkersburg South. He is the son of Dave and Trish Sanders of Parkersburg.

A two-way starter for Coach Mike Eddy’s Patriots football team, Nick is a wide receiver and free safety. Heading into Week Four action, Nick was averaging nearly nine yards per catch on the season and had recorded nine tackles (one for loss) on the defensive side of the football. He is also a member of the defending West Virginia Class AAA state runner-up Parkersburg South basketball program. As a junior, he played on Parkersburg South’s Junior Varsity squad that finished the season with a 17-2 overall record.

On a community level, Nick is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in Wood County through Fairlawn Baptist Church, his school, youth league basketball and the Wood County Schools Read Aloud program. He serves as a volunteer counselor with the Wood County Society’s Camp Echo program for adults with cognitive/intellectual and/or physical disabilities. He is also involved with Parkersburg South Basketball efforts to support “Anna’s Army,” established by former Parkersburg South student athlete Anna Gordon to raise awareness and research funds to find a cure for Friedreich’s Ataxia.

Following his graduation from Parkersburg South, Nick plans to attend West Virginia University and pursue a Petroleum Engineering degree.

During the 2015 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
