Ripley High School's Alyssa Perry Named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Vikings' cheerleader, band member earns statewide honor

 

Alyssa Perry of Ripley High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 13.

A senior, Alyssa is a 4.13 g.p.a. AP Honors student. She is actively involved in Student Council and is a member of National Honor Society, Rho Kappa social studies honor society and Mu Alpha Theta math honor society. She was also a nominee for the West Virginia Rhododendron Girls State program. She is the daughter of Jim and Amy Perry of Ripley.

A four-year varsity cheerleader, Alyssa is captain of the Viking Cheerleading Squad and has earned UCA and All-Mountain State Athletic Conference honors. In addition to cheering, Alyssa is a member of the award-winning Ripley Viking Marching Band, performing with the band at each football game and throughout its competition season. An accomplished musician, Alyssa has earned All-Area Band honors, and was selected to participate in the West Virginia University and Marshall University Honor Bands as a sophomore and junior.

On a community level, Alyssa is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in Jackson County through her church, Ripley High School and various community groups. She is an active 4-H member, and has served as a volunteer with Adopt-A-Family; as well as raising funds for cancer research, Shoes 4 Strangers and other charities.

Alyssa hopes to earn an academic scholarship and pursue an undergraduate degree in music education.

During the 2015 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.
