Caught in the Con Artist's Trap

Nobody expects to fall for a scam and yet day after day, Con Artists manage to steal our hard-earned money.

According to one con artist it has a lot to do with emotion - including excitement or fear.

"Think about the first time you fell in love or a time when someone cut you off on the freeway and you were seething for hours," one con said in an interview. "Were you thinking clearly? Probably not. Those who believe they'd never fall for a scam don't realize it's not about how smart you are; it's about how well you control your emotions. Fraud victims are people with emotional needs, just like the rest of us. But they can't separate out those needs when they make financial decisions. That's what makes them vulnerable" to scams.

Thousands of us fall prey to scams or frauds everyday. But we can fight back. One of the best tools you can have is to arm  yourself with information - and know when to report something fishy. To make it easy for  you AARP Oregon has a series of events coming up. Click on the link to learn more about the one nearest to you.
